It’s a beautiful day in our neighborhood.
Salemtown is a historic neighborhood just north of Germantown and downtown Nashville.
Established in 2005, the Salemtown Neighbors Neighborhood Association was formed to enhance the neighborhood by beautifying streetscapes, encouraging community involvement, promoting safety, and strengthening connections among residents.
Civil Rights Roots
Located in Salemtown, Fehr School opened in 1924 and was named for local merchant and school board member Rudolph Fehr. The school played a significant role in Civil Rights history when, on September 9, 1957, it became one of the first schools in the city to desegregate under the “Nashville Plan,” admitting four African American first graders amid threats, protests, and violence. This milestone came in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education rulings and the local Kelley v. Board of Education case, which mandated Nashville to begin gradual desegregation. Despite hostile resistance—including bomb threats and the firebombing of nearby Hattie Cotton School—Fehr stood as a symbol of the city's early, turbulent steps toward educational integration.
